Author: David Peace
A novel told from inside Brian Clough’s head during his ill-fated 44 days as Leeds United manager. Obsessive, bitter and gripping, it reads more like a psychological thriller than a sports book, and is proof that football fiction can be first-rate literature. The Times’s Rick Broadbent called it “probably the best novel ever written about sport”, and the Guardian’s Chris Petit praised its “warts and all” portrait. It is fiction, though, and some critics, including members of Clough’s family, objected to how it portrays him. Best for: readers who prefer fiction.
